Types of Braces Asheville

Whatever Your Orthodontic Needs, We Have a Solution

At our orthodontics practice, we are pleased to offer several types of braces to our patients in the Asheville, North Carolina area. Dr. Jim MacAlpine and our staff understand the issues and concerns that may arise for a person when choosing among the different types of braces available. This is why Dr. MacAlpine and our staff aim to educate all of our patients on their treatment options before they make a final decision.

Traditional Orthodontic Braces

Traditional orthodontic braces are what most people envision when they think of braces. The elements of traditional braces are usually composed of stainless steel. Traditional braces use brackets that are anchored to each tooth to support an archwire. The archwire is threaded through brackets that are bonded to the patient’s teeth. Over time the archwire slowly guides the patient’s teeth into their proper alignment. Elastics, also known as rubber bands, may also be attached to accelerate the movement of teeth. For those patients concerned about the color or “metal” look of stainless steel braces, we offer alternative gold, silver, or ceramic brackets, as well as clear options. Due to the relatively inexpensive components, traditional stainless steel braces are the most common and affordable type of braces at our Asheville practice. While expense is an obvious factor when considering orthodontics, many patients, especially adults, are concerned about how braces will affect their appearance.

Clear Braces

Clear braces offer an aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional orthodontic braces. Traditional and clear braces are extremely similar aside from their appearance. Like traditional orthodontic braces, clear braces use an archwire strung through brackets attached to the patient’s teeth to gradually guide them into alignment. The brackets are what set clear braces apart from their traditional counterparts. The brackets for clear braces are made from monocrystalline sapphire, making them nearly invisible. And since the brackets are designed to not discolor or stain, the only noticeable element of the clear braces will be the archwire.

Invisalign® Invisible Braces

For patients not satisfied with the conventional types of braces at our Asheville practice, Dr. MacAlpine and our staff are pleased to offer Invisalign® invisible braces. Invisalign® braces are a popular type of braces due to the relative simplicity of the product, its virtual invisibility, and the proven results it delivers. Unlike other types of braces we offer in our Asheville practice, Invisalign® aligners can be removed at any time, making them more like retainers than traditional braces.

Dr. MacAlpine begins by taking an impression of the patient’s teeth. The impression is then sent to Invisalign®, where custom-crafted aligners are fabricated according to Dr. MacAlpine’s exact specifications. Generally, patients wear between eighteen and thirty aligners during a complete Invisalign® treatment regimen. Each of the aligners is worn by the patient for about two weeks and then discarded. The Invisalign® aligners are to be worn at nearly all times, but can be removed while drinking, eating, flossing, or brushing. Each new Invisalign® aligner gradually moves the patient’s teeth into their proper alignment.

The typical treatment time for Invisalign® is between nine and fifteen months, similar to the treatment time associated with traditional braces. Because the aligners carry no risk of cutting the tongue, lips, or gums and can be removed, it is no wonder that Invisalign® is one of the most popular types of braces at our Asheville practice. However, not everyone is an ideal candidate for Invisalign®, especially those patients in need of extensive correction. We invite you to consult with Dr. MacAlpine to determine whether you are eligible for treatment with Invisalign® invisible braces.
